The paper reviews the transformations of the notion of risk in the course of human development and the history of social thought. It traces the evolution of the notion from the one associated with the idea that risk is a natural human condition caused by environment, limited sources and competition for these sources. Then it shows the shift towards understanding of risks caused by industrial civilization and risks of global scale.
